Day 1
Rome Naples Pompeii Sorrento
Departing Rome for the coast, reflect on the vibrant city of Naples – despite its place in the shadow of Vesuvius – or maybe because of it — people have been drawn here for millennia. There may be no place on earth that brings forth more images and emotions than our next stop, Pompeii. Wandering among the ancient shops, marveling at the richly decorated homes you are treated to a perfect picture of life as it was 2000 years ago. Tables set for breakfast, bread still in the oven — it’s impossible to glance up at the mountain and not feel a connection with the people of this ancient town on that fateful day it awoke… August 24, 79 A.D. After lunch in a local restaurant and a glimpse into the ancient art of making cameos, travel along the coast to the seaside resort town of Sorrento, perched on a cliff and affording some of the most spectacular views anywhere. Wander narrow streets, enjoy the local limoncello as you watch the setting sun – maybe the perfect way to end the day. (B,L,D)
Day 2
Sorrento Capri Sorrento
In a land blessed with glorious vistas and the beauty of nature, few spots can compete with the Island of Capri. A favourite resort of Rome’s wealthier citizens (the emperor Tiberius had a magnificent villa here), the island has lost none of its charm. If weather holds, the famed Blue Grotto, its eerie glow a trick of sunlight entering from beneath the water’s surface, is a highlight for everyone (but finding ways to describe that colour to friends back home…). We’ll take lunch as a group and make our way to the hillside town of Anacapri and its stunning views. Explore the town at your leisure and break out the camera before our ferry returns us to Sorrento for the night. (B,L,D)
Day 3
Sorrento Positano
Departing Sorrento in the morning you’ll travel past the quaint fishing villages that dot the gorgeous Amalfi Coast and arrive in the resort town of Positano. The day is yours – explore the cathedral, relax by the beach, shop for handmade ceramics or paper-goods. Dinner is whatever you wish but you’ll never find fresher seafood – maybe the anchovies for which the region is famous…. Tonight we stay in Positano. (B)
Day 4
Positano
After breakfast, continue your exploration of the town and its people – maybe even lunch at last night’s restaurant and become an instant regular! By local bus you can easily branch out and take in seaside Amalfi or the splendid 13th century “lion pulpit” in Ravello. Wander the cascading gardens of the nearby Villa Rufolo or Villa Cimbrone and experience vistas so moving you’ll want come back again and again. Again, you’ll stay the night in Positano.(B)
Day 5
Positano Pompeii Rome
You’ll find it hard to leave this setting, so we’ll ease you away…after breakfast and the morning to make new discoveries or revisit some favourites, we’ll start heading back in the early afternoon. Via Pompeii, we aim to be back in Rome around 9:30 in the evening – plenty of time for a late bite or a gelato and a stroll with our fellow travelers, now friends.(B)
